The New York Foundation for the Arts will induct composer Elliot Goldenthal, filmmaker Mira Nair, visual artist Fred Wilson and author and co-director of the Acquavella Gallery Michael Findlay into the NYFA Hall of Fame on April 23.
The NYFA Hall of Fame honors the work of artists to whom NYFA provided critical support early in their careers and recognizes philanthropists and patrons of the arts who have had an impact on the city’s cultural community. The induction ceremony and dinner will take place at Espace at 635 W. 42nd St.
Goldenthal, a NYFA Fellow in Music Composition in 1989, is an Oscar winner for his score for 2002’s “Frida” and a nominee for “Interview with the Vampire” and “Michael Collins”. He also has composed works for orchestra, theater, opera, ballet and film. He will be introduced by soprano Jessye Norman.
Nair, a NYFA Fellow in Film in 1988, has directed such features as “Salaam Bombay!”, “Monsoon Wedding” and her latest film, “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”. She will be introduced by documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker.
Wilson, a NYFA Fellow in Sculpture in 1987, is an artist whose work has been exhibited in cultural institutions and public spaces throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including the 50th Venice Biennale at which Wilson represented the U.S. He will be introduced by curator and scholar Carin Kuoni.
Findlay, a patron of the arts, is the co-director of Acquavella Galleries, which specializes in Impressionist and Modern European works of art and post-war American painting and sculpture. In 1973, he helped organize an art auction at Sotheby Parke-Bernet to benefit survivors of the Nicaraguan earthquake and since then has been involved in many such fundraising activities. He will be introduced by visual artist Billy Sullivan.
